This is an HTML Document

HTML is an abbreviation for HyperText Markup Language. HTML is a relatively simple formatting language developed to enable transfer of rich information over the World Wide Web (WWW). As such, it was originally it was designed to support:

• Ordered and unordered lists.
• Relative type sizes, basic font characteristics such as normal, emphasis, and strong emphasis.
• Embedded objects, such as pictures and sounds.
• Alignment options left, middle, and right for text, and top, middle, and bottom for pictures.
• Hyperlinks to other Internet resources, as identified by their Uniform Resource Locators (URLs). For example, here is a link back to the text document you just viewed TEXT.TXT .
• Other miscellaneous capabilities such as horizontal separators ("rules"):

HTML is closely related to other formatting languages, such as Rich Text Format (RTF) and Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML). Originally, HTML was actually a subset of SGML.

HTML was not conceived as a page layout language. Each HTML viewer, such as a Web browser, could decide on how best to interpret and display an HTML file. As HTML develops to meet the needs of it's many users, additions to the language are providing for more advanced capabilities. The following are examples of some of these newer features:

• Scrolling marquees: ...This is a scrolling Marquee...
• Watermarks to add non-scrolling background images and frames to add non-scrolling page sections.
• Font support: TrueType™, Postscript™ Type 1, and the newly announced OpenType™ collaboration.
• HTML layout templates, allowing flexible and reusable page layout descriptions.

Although HTML, like other WWW technologies is evolving, attention is being paid to keeping it an open, portable specification.
