HTML is an abbreviation for HyperText Markup Language. HTML is a relatively simple formatting language developed to enable transfer of rich information over the World Wide Web (WWW). As such, it was originally it was designed to support:


HTML is closely related to other formatting languages, such as Rich Text Format (RTF) and Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML). Originally, HTML was actually a subset of SGML.

HTML was not conceived as a page layout language. Each HTML viewer, such as a Web browser, could decide on how best to interpret and display an HTML file. As HTML develops to meet the needs of it's many users, additions to the language are providing for more advanced capabilities. The following are examples of some of these newer features:
